Far Right, after sitting dead last for about the first half of this 2-turn 3yo test, had to weave his way thru traffic to find a home down on rail then stormed up that rail to a 1 3/4 length victory in today’s $150,000, Smarty Jones Stakes, for 3yos, at a 2-turn mile over a “fast” Oaklawn Park main track!
The $150,000, Smarty Jones Stakes, for 3yo’s, at 1 mile, is the Monday MLK holiday featured race at Oaklawn Park and even though it’s not a graded event anymore it still carries a Derby Points 10-4-2-1 moniker as Oaklawn Park fires up its leg of the 2014 Derby Trail season with this 3yo, 1-mile tilt!
Coastline, at 5/2, by Speightstown, won the $60k Street Sense Stakes at Churchill 2 back winning by 3 lengths and covering that 1-mile dust-up in a solid 1:36.1 and with a good stalking trip! He stumbled coming out of the gate in the GIII Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes last out and was never really engaged in that 2-turn 2yo test, finishing 8th and well off the board. Looks like this one needs to be near the early pace to be effective and he’ll have to quickly rush up from that outside post #10, as it’s a short hop to the clubhouse turn here to be part of that early pace here on monday!
Son of a Preacher , at 9/2, by Pulpit, was 2nd to yesterday’s GIII Lecomte Stakes 2nd runner-up Golden Hawk in a last out $50k 1x alw tussle at the Fair Grounds where he did have the stretch lead for a while there after being banged around good at the start! His 3 starts shows some ability to stalk an early pace but this one might need a few more good races under his belt to bring out his blood lines!
Fire Starter , at 5/1, by Tapit, won a Dec 31st, $40k Mdn last out at Laurel, after 3 previous unsuccessful tries, stalking the early pace than dashing off to an impressive 10 lengths victory. The 1:39 1-mile time might be a bit misleading as with such a big stretch lead we sure his rider found no need to push him any harder!
D’cajun Cat , at 6/1, by D’Wildcat and trained by Steve Asmussen, drew the short run to the clubhouse turn in the #1 hole starting position as he was 3rd in the Sugar Bowl Stakes last out by 3 1/2 lengths behind Saturday’s GIII Lecomte Stakes runner-up Albano! He was also 5th in the GIII Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill last summer. He tends to be in the early mix but we think sprinting still might his best career path as monday’s race might tell the tale for him!
Walt , at 6/1, by Run Away and Hide, has made all 3 of his lifetime starts at Remington Park ,winning his Mdn and Alw tussles then coming a good enough 4th in the Springboard Mile Stakes being 5 lengths off the winner at the line, after a poor start! This one just might be an early speed here on monday as the pp’s show he tends to like it up front early!
Tanzanite Cat , at 6/1, by Graeme Hall, went wire to wire last out in a Fair Grounds off the turf to the main track 5 1/2 f Mdn sprint, winning by 4 lengths at the line in 1:05 flat! His 2 race resume shows good early speed and he’ll need it here coming out of the #8 gate into that short hop rush to the clubhouse turn! Probable early speed here, too!
Whyruawesome , at12/1, by Whywhywhy and out of an Awesome Again mare, has 3, GIII starts on his dance card. Ran a good 2nd in the GIII Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington Park back on Sept 7th of last year. Then ran in that off the turf GIII Bourbon Stakes over a very wet Keeneland main to a disappointing 11th finish but last out came late for 5th in the GIII Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes.
This one’s got a GI Kentucky Derby pedigree and is battle tested at the graded level too, but probably needs more distance to draw out his gifts. Watch out for this one in here as he just might be ready for a big 3yo breakout moment and 12/1 would be just delicious, too!
A Step Ahead , at 12/1, by Giant’s Causeway, came 2nd last out in the $125,000, Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity Stakes at Hawthorne where he rallied up late for that 2nd showing just a length and half off the winner at the line! No real consistency in his pp’s yet but good late-stretch rallying ability is always a good future sign as this one needs more seasoning and he’ll get it here as he cuts back to the mile distance here on monday!
Unstoppable Colby , at 20/1, by Pulpit, is but a non-mdn winner in 3 starts and Denali Rahy Ruler, with the wonderful sounding name, at 30/1, by Roman Ruler, didn’t have it in that same Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park last out finishing 10th, 21 lengths back as this pair rounds out this field of 10 for this Oaklawn Park monday featured race!
Note* – A horse named Will Take Chargeburst onto the 3yo scene with a win here last year with that classic late running style of his! Just a little something to ponder over !!!
