Yes, all our Big Apple readers, it’s 3yo time again at Aqueduct as 8, 3yo’s will take to the Aqueduct winter inner track, at a mile and 70 yds, for a purse of $200k in the GII Jerome Stakesthis Saturday afternoon.
This race is not only the first NYC Derby Trail contest of the new year but it’s also the first 10-4-2-1 derby points test of the young 3yo season anywhere in the country!
Noble Moon , by Malibu Moon gets the call as the 6/5 M/L favorite here on Saturday as he comes in off a 3 lengths back 3rd in the GII Nashua Stakes here at Aqueduct this past Nov where has was coming late off a bumping start that left him at the of the pack early. He has just a 2 race resume and will need a big finish as he steps up to an extra 70 yds here.
Scotland , at 7/2, is out of the Tony Dutrow barn, also has just a pair of lifetime starts. One at Laurel where he finished 2nd by a head in a 6f first out and 2nd again in another maiden tussle here at Aqueduct on Nov 30th at 7f’s back 2 3/4 length that time. He not a front-runner thus far so the mile and 70 here might bare some fruit for him!
Classic Giacnroll , at 5/1, by Giacomo, does have the obligatory mdn and 1x Alw wins under his belt already that came down at Parx, then finished 3rd last in a muddy $100k MaryLander Stakes at Laurel last out! He’ll be trying 2-turns here for the very first time and also tends to come on late as well!
Master Lightning , at 6/1, is by Pulpit and is a Todd Pletcher trainee who won a 1x alw here last out bobbing the break but vied early and got the win after grabbing the lead at the 2nd call and never letting go. He also brings graded experience from the GII Nashua and GII Remsen Stakes runs where he finished well off the board in both. He got some early speed and in this group that might be an advantage! A solid exotics chose here!
Lawmaker, at 8/1, is also out of Malibu Moon, won his only lifetime start down at Laurel in a 40k Mdn at a mile run in a halfway decent 1:38.4. He sat a good off the pace stalking trip in that tilt to close nicely for the win! He trained by the up and coming Chad Brown and is worth a look-see as a super filler at the very least here on Saturday!
Pin and Win , Matuszak, and Mental Iceberg will round out this field of 8 here on Saturday. They all have 1 mdn resume win to their credits and do have graded and stakes level experiences but are clearly haven’t made the grade beyond their mdn wins!
