2012 GII Louisiana Derby draws field of 14 | Post, Picks, PP’s, M/L Odds

In between rounds of NCAA final 4 play in New Orleans this weekend, the Fair Grounds will run their premiere race day of the entire Winter/Spring meet this Sunday that will culminate in the $1,000,000 GII Louisiana Derby, going 1 1/8 mile!

Free Past Performances,

A full field of 14, 3yo’s was drawn today for what looks to be a wide open affair with one or more of these 3yo’s ending up in Louisville on May 5th for the “Big Dance”!

The marquee names for this year’s edition are:

Mark Valeski, 2nd in the GII Risen Star Stakes here last out by a head-bob to El Padrino who’ll take on Union Rags in the Florida Derby on Saturday! He’ll stretch out to 1 1/8 mile here but any kind of repeat performance like that in the Risen Star should find him in the mix here on Sunday!

Rousing Sermon, is shipping in off a disappointing effort in the GII San Felipe at Santa Anita last out. There were high hopes for him in the Hollendorfer barn after a stellar 2yo campaign but in 2012 he hasn’t hit the board in 2 outings. So maybe a change of scenery and an easier field like the one he would find in the GI Santa Anita Derby might help him to find a few more G/S dollars towards a berth in the big dance!

Z Dager, is back for a third appearance on the 2012 derby trail at the Fair Grounds this year. With a 2nd in the GIII Le Comte Stakes and 3rd in the Risen Star, Z Dager will be the hometown boy here on Sunday!

Mr. Bowling, the winner of that same Le Comte Stakes will give the Fair Grounds main another go after a lackluster 11th place finish in the GII Risen Star last out!

Finnegans Wake, a good 3rd to Hansen in the GIII Gotham Stakes up at Aqueduct looks to make a name for himself here on Sunday!

Cigar Street,(son of Street Sense) who broke his maiden by 13 3/4 lengths at Fair Grounds on March 10 covering a 1 1/16 mile that day in 1:43.75 is the new kid on the block!

So below you’ll find this field of 14 for the 2012 edition of the GII Louisiana Derby this Sunday at the Fair Grounds that wraps up their 3yo season!

2012 GI Florida Derby Draws 9 | Posts, Picks, M/L Odds, PP’s

2012 $1,000,000 GI Florida Derby is on tap this Saturday at Gulfstream Park!

A field of 9 top 3yo’s was drawn this afternoon for Saturday’s $1,000,000 GI Florida Derby, going 1 1/8 mile at Gulfstream Park!

Free Past Performances,

Headlining this year’s edition is GII Fountain of Youth Stakes winner and odds on favorite to win this year’s Kentucky Derby right now in Union Rags at 6/5.

Union Rags handily won that GII Fountain of Youth under just a hand ride by new jockey Julien Leparoux winning by an easing 4 lengths in 1:42.68!  Union Rags is the one to beat here on Saturday so he’d fits into any exotics play!

At 2/1 is the Todd Pletcher trained El Padrino winner of the GII Risen Star last out at the Fair Grounds. Looks to us like Mr. Todd is willing to roll out his best 3yo in El Padrino to assert his dominance of this meet here in 2012 as El Padrino surely would have been the favorite in Sunday’s GII Louisiana Derby. Exotics for him too!

El Padrino however, does need a bit more in graded stakes earnings to make the 2012 Kentucky Derby field this year as $200k in GSE probably isn’t going to cut it this year, so a board hit for El Padrino becomes an imperative on Saturday!

Other names to watch here are: News Pending , 2nd to Union Rags last out, Take Charge Indy, 2nd to Prospective in the GII Tampa Bay Derby and Reveron, winner of the Gulfstream Derby here in January!

So here is the field for this all important Derby Trail finale at Gulfstream Park this season!

By Posts, Horses, M/L Odds,

1.  Fort Loudon – 20/1

2.  News Pending – 8/1

3. Take Charge Indy – 5/1

4. Neck ‘N Neck – 20/1

5. Z Camelot – 50/1

6. Union Rags – 6/5

7. Bartolome – 30/1

8. El Padrino – 2/1

9. Reveron – 12/1

Everyone carry’s 122 lbs.

Post Time will be 5:40 p.m. EDT!

Picks are – 6,8,2,3 boxed exacta or tri’s then 9,1 in a super!

So if all goes according to Hoyle, Union Rags and El Padrino should be the race here on Saturday and a good preview of what to expect come Derby Day at Churchill Downs this May 5th!
