Royal Delta and Awesome Maria both return to racing for 2012 in GIII Sabin Stakes

It's an all ladies day card at Gulfstream Park this Saturday

Tomorrow at beautiful Gulfstream Park is an all Ladies Day race card with 3 big Graded Stakes on tap, in the GII Davona Dale Stakes for the 3yo ladies, GIII Very One Stakes for the older lady turfers and the $100,000 GIII Sabin Stakes, going 1 1/16 mile , for the older girls will showcase two of the top older lady runners in training in 2011.

Free Past Performances,

Royal Delta, the 2011 Ladies Classic winner comes out for her first run of the 2012 racing season and looks to be in top form with just a bit of winter rust to work off and is the 6/5 favorite here.

In 2011, Awesome Maria was going places after rolling off 4 consecutive G/S wins in the first half of 2011 but was sidelined with by a season ending injury after her victory in the GI Ogden Phipps Hcp up at Belmont Park last June!

Trainer Todd Pletcher has been bring this race’s defending champ back slowly for this date and if Mr. Todd feels she ready well we all know how Mr. Todd has had the run of this place all meet long here at Gulfstream and Awesome Maria is his prize female pupil, so 8/5 on the M/L line is a bit gifty to us off the long layoff!

Groupie Doll, who had a good 2011 with a G/S win and a pair of good 2nd’s in the Charles Town Oaks and the GII Raven Run at Keeneland. Groupie Doll has been busy at Gulfstream this winter running in a pair of $100,000 Aoc’s, winning the first and a good 2nd to Boys At Tosconova in her last out! Groupie Doll should find her way to the board in this group of five older lady runners.

So 5 lovely ladies are coming out for this GIII adventure here on Saturday!

By Posts, Horse, M/L Odds

1. Ghostly Darkness – 15/1

2. Royal Delta – 6/5

3. Awesome Maria – 8/5

4. Groupie Doll – 3/1

5. Canadian Mistress – 8/1

Post time is 3:49 pm est!

Picks are – 2,3,4 boxed exacta or tri!

So it’s an all ladies day card at Gulfstream Park this Saturday, much like an Oaks or Black-eyed Susan day that always precedes a Triple Crown event. In this case, it’s Sunday’s GII Fountain of Youth Stakes!

Amazombie goes head to head with The Factor in GII San Carlos Stakes

In what just might be the best collection of west-coast sprinters to hit the Santa Anita main this season, a field of 6-fleet-footed runners is coming out for the $200,000, GII San Carlos Stakes, in a true 7f shootout here in Saturday’s featured race #7.

Free Past Performances,

The 2011 Breeders’ Cup Sprint champ in Amazombie is penciled in for his first outing of 2012 here on Saturday against 5 other speedy foes that includes names like,

The Factor, who has already clicked off a sub-1:20 7f’s here this season in the GI Malibu Stakes and is primed.

The speedy Sway Away is back after a long layoff and should make his present known early on here, as he is a “needs the lead” type if memory serves.

Rothko, was a good 2nd by 3 lengths to The Factor, last out, in that same GI Malibu Stakes and will be a factor in this contest too!

Mensa Heat’s, 3rd in the GII Palos Verdes Stakes last month was no small accomplishment as that day’s winner Frumious ran an insane 1:07.28 over a w/f surface. He also finished just 3/4’s behind Amazombie in last fall’s GI Ancient’s Title test, so Mensa Heat does belongs here for sure.

Canonize, ran a very nice 7f test here at 1:20.73 in a high-priced Alw last out, over the likes of Indian Firewater and the Tweebster! He got a nice speed rating of 109 off this effort, too!

So 6 “fast and furious” names will be posted below by

Posts, Horses, M/L Odds,

1. Canonize – 12/1

2. Amazombie – 8/5

3. The Factor – 7/5

4. Mensa Heat – 6/1

5. Rothko – 4/1

6. Sway Away – 6/1

Post time is 3:36 pm pst!

Picks are – 2,3,5,6 boxed exacta, then all in a dime super, as this just might be the best 7f shootout at Santa Anita this year!

So this field of 6 speedy steeds just might be the best collection of male sprinters the So/Cal circuit has to offer for 2012 and there’s a really decent chance that a good portion of this field will be here over this same strip come November in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Sprint race.

GIII Southwest Stakes will be divided into “2” Divisions this President’s Day

Oaklawn Park scene of two, 2012 GIII Southwest Stakes races this Monday!

With 21 entries bursting this GIII Derby test at its seams, the Oaklawn officials are taking the extraordinary step of breaking up this race in two.

Free Past Performances,← for both race 8 and race 9!

In a rare use of the term “divisions” for within a single race, the 2012 GIII Southwest Stakes with its 21 entries will be run with 2 different fields or divisions, with equal purses of $250,000, going the same 1-mile distance, with separate win, place and show payouts etc, etc! The graded stakes earning towards a derby gate will also be equal for the both winners of each division, the same with 2nd’s, 3rd’s and so on!

So below you will find both divisional races and their entries,

10. Big Wednesday – 15/1

Picks are – 2,7,9,3 box-exacta!

Our picks for both contests are anything but a lock to be sure. With such large fields, both going an easy to steal on the front-end mile, both races could blow-up rather easily with huge payouts to follow.

Yes, everyone the 2012 GIII Southwest Stakes results will probably have you scratching your head by early evening on Monday as you probably won’t know what to make of the action from either race and where all the top finishers fit in the Derby puzzle!

Suggestion: wait for the GII Rebel here next month to sort out the Oaklawn Park derby trail picture, as this Monday’s GIII prep is only going to give you a handicapping headache and a wagering belly ache!

GII San Vicente Stakes is the Derby Trail’s 2nd Stop this Holiday weekend

GII San Vicente Stakes is the featured derby trail race on Sunday at Santa Anita Park

The GII San Vicente Stakes is the Sunday stop on this year’s Derby Trail calendar for this President’s Day weekend!

7F’s will be the required distance over this speed-favoring, Santa Anita main, with $150,000 in G/S earnings up for grabs that will count towards a Derby berth this spring!

Free Past Performances,

The marquee name for this 7f shootout is, Creative Cause who was “the” west coast 2yo last year, winning the GI Norfolk and finish a good 3rd in the B/C Juvy behind Hansen and Union Rags!

Creative Cause already has almost half a million in Graded Stakes earnings toward a date in Louisville this spring, so this is more of a tune-up race for him then a need for G/S earnings. Creative Cause will probably only need a top 3 finish out of this holiday weekend tussle to start him down the road to Louisville later this spring as he has bigger fish to fry!

Drill, looks to be coming out here on Sunday as he had been Creative Cause’s main rival in 2011, but ended the year backing up with progressively worst finishes as 2011 wound down!

Drill has already been out for first run of 2012 in the San Pedro Stakes with a very ordinary 5th finish that day still looking very much the way he did at the end of the 2011 season! He’ll need to find his winning footing again here on Sunday if he wants to be considered a serious derby horse again!

So here is this field of 6, 3yo’s coming out for a Sunday “Dash for some graded earning Cash”!

By Posts, Horses and M/L Odds!

1. Let’s Get Crackin – 6/1

2. Creative Cause – 3/5

3. Drill – 9/2

4. Smoking G – 8/1

5. American Act – 4/1

6. Captain Obvious – 12/1

Post time will be at 3:36 pm pst!

Picks are – 1,2,3,4 in a exacta box,

So we have another 7f dust-up but this time at Santa Anita where who ever gets the early lead has got a good shot to keeping it right to the line, as this Santa Anita main favors just such runners! Just hope your horse doesn’t miss the break in this GII speed-fest!
