International Star, had to come off his stretch rail position where he had gotten stuck in traffic forcing him to switch to an outside track to find the running room he needed for a late bid to win today’s $200,000, GIII Lecomte Stakes, for 3yo’s at 1 mile and 70 yds over a “good” Fairgrounds main track, winning by a clear-cut 2 1/2 lengths!
Vicar’s in Trouble, by Into Mischief, looked for all the world like Oxbow here last year as he stormed off to an impressive looking 7 length win in today’s $200,000, GIII LeComte Stakes, for 3yo’s, at 1 mile and 70 yds over a “fast” Fair Grounds main track
Albano , was back those near 7 lengths for 2nd, 3rd went to race favorite Gold Hawk, back another 1/2 length with early pacesetter Roman Unbridled, holding on for the super spot back another full length more!
The Fair Grounds holds its first exciting day of big-time racing this Saturday here in 2014, topped off by the first leg of the 2014 Fair Grounds Derby Trail trials in the $200,000, GIII LeComte Stakes, for 3yos, at 1 mile and 70 yds over the Fair Grounds main track.
The GIII LeComte Stakes, also starts our in depth coverage of the 2014 Derby Trail as this race has spun off some recent top named winners like – Hard Spun, Friesan Fire, Ron the Greek, Wilkinson and last year’s Preakness winner Oxbow who ran away with this race by 9 lengths here last season. So as you can see this is indeed an important first stop on the derby trail each season!
Roman Unbridled , by Roman Ruler, seems to have the hottest hand coming into this Saturday’s first Fair Grounds 3yo test of the season with a solid 7f’s win in the Big Drama Stakes over at Delta Downs last out, going wire to wire in an 8 plus lengths win!
He also has this distance under his belt too as he was 4th in the 1 1/16 mile, GIII Delta Down Jackpot Stakes 2 back.
We love the pedigree here and the fact that he is distance tested already in stakes and graded stakes company too! He is an exotics first thought for us here !
Got Shades , by Pollard’s Vision, has a pair of Louisiana Downs 2yo stakes wins on his resume already, then was a good 3rd, 2 back in the Zuma Beach Stakes out at Santa Anita. He’s last out 5th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf clash where he did make up some good ground at the end after being shuffled around and steadied in that 2yo sod test!
A decent Pedigree, solid top company racing experience and distance tested too, so any good price brings him into our exotics thinking, as well!
Gold Hawk , by Empire Maker, is 2 for 2 in his brief career but did win a mile and 70 $50k OC1x test here last out winning by 3 1/4 lengths in a nice 1:43.4 with a solid closing move to boot!
The blood is top-rate here, with the track experience and at the distance here on Saturday along with what looks to be some solid closing form, he also goes into our exotics thinking!
Albano , by Istan, won the 6f, Sugar Bowl Stakes here last out by 1 1/4 length run in a mildly good 1:11.2. He is 2 for 3 lifetime with both wins over this surface. Went to the lead early in both of his wins here so look for him to be up front early here this Saturday as he stretches to 2-turns for the first time! Stakes winners always deserve a long look!
Smarty’s Echo , by Smarty Jones, is 3 for 4 lifetime in board hits with the obligatory Mdn win as he was 2nd in the GI Breeders’ Futurity over the poly up at Keeneland 2 back last fall. He then finished a way out of it 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile tilt at Santa Anita last out.
He has had some recent good workouts over this course in prepping for this race and along with his pedigree and double GI experiences might be a good supplement to a super play!
Vicar’s in Trouble , by Into Mischief, broke his maiden here in a Dec 14th, 6f, $40k Mdn going all the way on the front end to a 13 lengths win covering the 6f’s in a snappy 1:10.3 where he was eased up a bite late. He should be on the early pace here and “if” he can handle the 2-turns here he could be trouble indeed in the stretch!
Silent Ruler and Plug Catcher , are both by Roman Ruler, but our only Mdn winners with less than impressive numbers in their wins. You might catch some lightning in a bottle here as the Fair Grounds in recent year’s has coughed up some huge 99/1 shot winners in these big 3yo G/S races of late!
Rainbow Trip , by Sightseeing, comes in off 3 straight turf outings at Retama, where he first broke his Mdn, came 3rd in a local $75k Stakes by just a neck, then winning a 1 mile alw dust-up last out there back on Dec. 28th. A Turf to Dirt switch here everyone but his winning turf times aren’t in the same league as some in here! It would be a true upset to see this one in the Winner’s Circle but you’d deserve the probable whooping big price on this one should he cross the line first!
