Early pacesetterEgg Drop, had to find another gear in deep stretch and refire to take down, by a “nose”, today’s $250,000, GI Matriarch Stakes, for 3yo’s and up F/M’s, at a mile over a “firm” BHP turf!
Discreet Marq, was back that head bobbing nose at the line for 2nd, 3rd went to defending champBetter Lucky, back another 1/2 length with multiple graded winning lady turfer in Dayatthespa, back an even further 1/2 length to fill in today’s super spot!
Better Lucky, who got no love at all from the Betfair/Hollywood faithful went off as a 35/1 shot by post time and then buried them alive with a stirring stretch run to win by a length the GIMatriarch Stakes, for 3yo and up lady turfers, going 1-mile, for a purse of $250k today at Betfair/Hollywood Park!
Dayatthespa , the 8/5 post time favorite, reared up and did something of a spooky semi jump just coming off the clubhouse turn, for no apparent reason that probably cost her the race. That did however, spark a steward’s inquiry that ultimately had no bearing on the final placings here today!
Note* – We talk a lot about keeping a sharp eye out for good horses who get no love from the betting public on big race days here at this blog.
Well, Better Lucky, a daughter of Ghostzapper, with a GII win this year and a good 3rd last out in the GI QEII at Keeneland is a prime example of an overlooked horse in a big race and why she was one of our top 4 horses for this race! She shouldn’t have been 35/1 here today and we are quite certain you’ll never see 35/1 on her ever again!
Lesson – pay greater attention to the board on GI days, it is alway telling you something!
