Keen Pauline, a 15/1 shot, took early control of a somewhat sluggish and leisurely early pace leading this group of 9 all the way around the Pimlico main to a clear-cut 2 3/4 lengths win in today’s $250,000, GII Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, for 3yo fillies at 1 1/8 mile.
“7” Ladies will go 2-turns here at Santa Anita as the graded older F/M’s season here rolls on!
Fiftyshadesofhay , at 5/2, after a solid 3yo season in 2013 found the going tough last out in the GII La Canada Stakes, where she landed 4th after a very bumpy start, but did rally up just a length off of Spellbound in a 4 horse blanket finish that day.
Let Faith Arise , at 7/2, was 2nd by just a neck in that same race as Ondine, at 3/1, (the 2nd Baffert entry here) surrendered a stretch lead, settling for 3rd back just a 1/2 length all in that same thrilling bang/bang GII La Canada Stakes finish last out!
Iotapa , at 7/2, 2nd in the GII Santa Monica Stakes by a length last out has hit the board in 3 straight west coast F/M 2-turn dust-up’s but the winner circle here has been elusive for her! Runs on well late but never quite good enough for the win.
Golden Production at 6/1,and Stanwyck , at 4/1, are the 1-2 finishers in the Jan 14th $75k Paseana Stakes here last out where just a head separated the pair at the line as both closed well for the 1-2 finish!
Yahilwa, at 30/1, has but a 4th in a $40k S/A Oc on her U.S. resume other wise was just a spotty stakes winner over in jolly olde England before crossing over the pond!
Fiftyshadesofhay , who after a poor start finished 4 lengths back for 2nd in the GII Bayakoa Stakes over at BHP last out where she never could reel in the front-running Broken Sword , looks to make amends here at Santa Anita Park on Sunday in the $200,000, GII La Canada Stakes, for 4yo and up F/M’s, at 1 1/16 mile over the Santa Anita main track.
7 – 4yo fillies will go to the post in race #8 here on Sunday as it’s the older girls turn to go a GII, 1 1/16 mile here this weekend.
Fiftyshadesofhay , at 8/5, is a multiple graded winner over different venues and has hit the board in the GI Las Virgenes and GI S/A Oaks and was a good 2nd in the GI Alabama this past summer at Saratoga! This one tends to stalk but is more of a grinding type like Tiz Miz Sue was! Exotics “Yes” here!
Broken Sword , at 7/5, who jumped out of the alw ranks for the surprising win that same GII Bayakoa Stakes over at the now defunct BHP main. She took full advantage of that stumbling start by Fiftyshadesofhay , to grab the early lead that she was never really challenged for skipping off to a 4 length victory by the line! This one is something of a new face in the west coast F/M’s handicap division and we’d like to see her run that same Bayakoa Stakes effort here on Sunday before we jump on this one’s bandwagon but we’ll use her in our box exotics plays anyway!
Ondine , at 4/1, came a good 3rd in the GII Hollywood Oaks way back on June 22nd last year, then finished 3rd again in a Del Mar $62.5k 2x alw tussle but was 6 back at the line. Her last out was a win in the BSR $50k J.F. Lewis Stakes taking that tussle by 1/2 length over Warren’s Vendatta, going 1:17.2 in that 6 1/2f shootout. This one’s never been off the board in any of her races so she quite use able here in our exotics thinking!
Spellbound , at 8/1, you might remember her as a 2013 GI S/A Oaks buzz horse but finished 4th 6 1/2 lengths back that day and then was sidelined until she resurfaced again in that same GII Bayakoa Stakes last out where she had no bid of any kind, coming 6th, 12 lengths back! This one has wonderful connections in that she’s by Bernardini out of a Tale Of The Cat mare and trained by Richard Mandella! So, a big question mark here but if you feel her handlers know what they are doing here then add her to a 50 cent tri or super play!
Oscar Party, at 8/1, has a number of good graded starts to her name and was 3rd last out in the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks! She has little dirt form as most of her outings have been either turf or poly affairs! She has no real closing kick or doesn’t tend to go to the front early either as she seems to be more of a picking up the pieces type!
Rathbaun, at 15/1, has no stake or graded experience and has run only on the GG and BHP poly surfaces! She did win a $40k 1x alw over at BHP last out where she stalked the pace to close for the neck win! This one goes only in a super play and only at a big price!
Let Faith Arise , at 12/1, rounds out this field of 7, is a sprinter by trade mostly on the GG poly at the alw level. She did come 8th but just 2 1/4 lengths back in the GIII Sen. Ken Maddy Stakes over the S/A downhill turf course last out! No dirt or distance form here so we will not be using this one here on Sunday at all!
