In a thrilling head bobbing finish Beholder (in her very last race) got her nose in front of the undefeated Songbird at the line of today $2,000,000, GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Forever Unbridled came 3rd while Stellar Wind who flat missed the break did fill out today’s Superfecta!
Here is all the other great B/C racing action at Santa Anita Today!
GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff, at 1 1/8 mile – (Dirt), for 3yo and Up F/M’s – Purse $2,000,000, Friday Nov 4th, at Santa Anita Park!
Beholder, 2012’s 2yo Filly of the year, 2013’s 3yo Filly of the year. Undefeated in 2015, 17 wins, 6 2nds in 25 lifetime races with over $5 Million in earnings in the bank.
But here is 2016 has placed 2nd twice to Stellar Windin the GI Clement L Hirsch and GI Zenyatta Stakes and a 2nd to California Chrome in the GI Pacific Classic in her last 3 outings!
She is probably off her best lifetime form going into this race but this 6yo daughter of Henny Hughes may have one more good race in her yet, but she is now probably traveling down that final furlong or 2 towards a well-deserved retirement!
Songbird – the 2015 2yo filly of the year, undefeated in 11 starts as only an injury kept her from winning this year’s GI Kentucky Oaks! $3.3 million in earnings and is the most recent winner of the GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama Stakes at Saratoga this summer without suffering the Saratoga “Curse of Champions” and was a last out winner of the GI Cotillion at Parx showing she can win on the road too.
Like Beholder, she too will enjoy all her meals at home in front of this race as Santa Anita is where she calls home too!
I’m a Chatterbox, winner to GI DelCap earlier this summer in a very bizarre start at Del Park and was a last out winner of the GI Juddmonte Spinster at Keeneland to earn a berth in this year’s edition. $2.2 M in earnings with a 16-8-3-2 life record and looks to have no problem with this 1 1/8 mile distance.
This one, however, has taken no turns over this Santa Anita main track and this will be her first flight west of the Mississippi ever!
Stellar Wind, looks like she might be, at this moment, the class of the West Coast Female Handicap Div. with a pair of solid wins over Beholder, in their last 2 meetings. She was also the 2015 3yo filly of the year and has blossomed right to the top of her craft here in 2016 and looks to be the major stumbling block to anyone who wants to win this year’s Distaff title!
Stellar Wind, is another Santa Anita based lady who is going to thrive over this very familiar oval and could be on the verge of horse racing superstardom with a win here as she was the runner-up in the 2015 edition out at Keeneland last year!
Land Over Sea – is brought to you by team Reddam/O’Neill/Gutierrez of I’ll Have Enough and Nyquist fame. She did win this year’s GI Santa Anita Oaks out here last spring, then finished a very nice 2nd in the 2016 edition of the GI Kentucky Oaks, but alas hasn’t found the board in her past 3 graded starts.
She too is a California girl and we would have to think that Team Reddam is hoping for a return to her California winning ways as she has settled back nicely into her home digs on the Santa Anita backside, but it’s a mighty big ask against this group formidable ladies!
Curalina – Daughter of Curlin, with Johnny V. and Todd Pletcher east coast connections was a last out 2nd in the GI Personal Ensign at Saratoga earlier this summer and does offer $1.5 m in earnings with a 12-6-3-2 lifetime record to be part of this 2016 Distaff squad.
She, like I’m a Chatterbox, will be tripping the lights fantastic out here at Santa Anita for the first time ever on Friday, Nov 4th, but she does tend to hit the board in all her big graded starts so we’ll have to find a home for her in our exotics thinking in this 1 1/8 mile, season ending, Older Ladies dust-up come race day!
Forever Unbridled– gets her 2016 Distaff berth off a last out win in the GI Beldame at Belmont Park earlier this month and along with a win in the GI Apple Blossom at Oaklawn, a good 2nd in the GI Ogden Phipps and a 3rd in the GI Personal Ensign, Forever Unbridled, has been a force to be reckoned with in the older gals div this year back east.
She too, will be making that long flight west to be part of this 2016 Distaff contest but for now she is only “California Dreamin” as she’s bringing no real west coast experience to draw on for this final ladies handicap div event for 2016. She’s at least worthy of an exotics look on race day with her 2016 resume!
Corona Del Inca – thisArgentine bred won this season’s Distaff “Win and You’re In” down under South America way, but sports only that win this year! If she comes, she’ll be outgunned and outnumbered by these “California Girls” who are the class of the female handicap world right now!
Long odds are coming here!!!
Spectre– is coming off a solid 2nd in the Grp 1 Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp at Chantilly this Sept! This French-Bred might be better suited for the ups and down of european turf style racing, but there’s nothing wrong with tossing your hat into this year’s Distaff ring and giving “the continent’s” legend of handicappers something to root for on a quiet first Friday evening this November across the pond.
Look for very long odds here, too!!!
Are there more possible entries to come for this 2016 ladies spectacular on Friday Nov. 4th? Probably, but as of this posting this looks to be the field for the 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff that always the warp up to Day 1 of any Breeders’ Cup Weekend!
