2015 Preakness Stakes Probables with Rules for Entering the Preakness

2015 Preakness Stakes Probables

The GI Preakness Stakes annually offers only “14 gates” each season and here’s briefly how those gates get filled, as they’re very different then the Kentucky Derby entry rules –

Preakness Entry Rules

  • The first seven positions are determined by graded stakes earnings as formerly in the Derby.
  • The next four slots are given to the top lifetime earners in non-restricted races, so any earnings from restricted races would be subtracted from their total earnings.
  • The final three positions are given to the horses with the most lifetime earnings regardless of the type of race, open or restricted.
  • If there are any ties, they will draw lots from the tied horses to pick who gets in the race.

Also, no horse who earns purse money in The Kentucky Derby (which is the first 5 finishers) will be denied the opportunity to start in the Preakness.

2015 Preakness Probables

American Pharoah – GI Kentucky Derby winner

Firing Line – 2nd in the Derby

Dortmund – 3rd in the Derby

Danzig Moon – 5th in the Derby, but the connections do have their eye on a Queen’s Plate start at Woodbine in July!

International Star – Ankle chip now sidelines this 3yo from a Preakness run !  More

Stanford 2nd in the GII Louisiana Derby to International Star but had the lead for most of the stretch run in that race also was scratched out of the Derby!

Divining Rod – Winner of the GIII Lexington Coolmore Stakes last out!

Bodhisattva – Winner of the Fred Tesio Stakes (the Pimlico local prep for the Preakness)

Possibles – D. Wayne didn’t tip his hand as to the future of Mr. Z, but D. Wayne does love to run them!

Derby horses definitely not coming to Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes are –

Frosted, per his trainer and Bolo, who’s headed back to the turf for a turf career or maybe a Belmont Stakes run.

War Story – is off to a lesser Derby campaign for 2015, so no Preakness for him, say his connections!

Mubtaahij – now targeting the GI Belmont Stakes according to his connections!

Ocho Ocho Ocho, is headed back home to sunny Southern California where he’ll rest up for something at the end of the Santa Anita meet or something early in the Del Mar meeting so say his connections, so no Preakness 140 runner here!

Unlikely are –

The Pletcher trio of Materiality, Carpe Diem and Itsaknockout are all back in NY and in good shape but the Pletcher camp has a history not shipping to the Preakness with it derby runners as the GI Belmont Stakes is about a month away now and it’s right in their backyard!

Trainer Ron Moquett for Far Right says he’s no plans for his 3yo pupil right now!

Tencendur – Came out of the Derby in fine shape but his connections didn’t rule him in or out of Preakness #140!

and Upstart, who was pulled up in the Derby stretch run than vanned off as a precaution, seems to fine now as his trainer Rick Violette is still scratching his head over what happened to his 3yo charge during the Derby. We’d have to think with less than 2 weeks before the Big Preakness show that his connections would sit it out just to be sure their prized 3yo has no further issues!

This List is far from complete and we’ll update it over the next few weeks as horses are added or removed until the draw for post positions which is now set for Wednesday, May 13th!
