2014 GI Belmont Stakes – Can the future be found in the Past?

California Chrome - sparkles again in GI Preakness Stakes at Pimlico today
California Chrome – sparkles again in GI Preakness Stakes at Pimlico last out and looks to wrap up the first Triple Crown championship since Affirmed in 1978!!

downthestretchs’ can see this year’s GI Belmont Stakes playing out in “3” possible, but memorable past Belmont Stakes reprised scenarios as California Chrome comes to the  Big Apple on Saturday chasing the Triple Crown dream!

(Scenario #1) – We’ll call the “Smarty Jones” Moment!

In the 2004 Belmont Stakes, Smarty Jones gets to within the shadow of the Belmont finish line before the less leg-weary Birdstone gets up just in time for the win and spoiling all Triple Crown fun that year. California Chrome could very well get caught in very deep stretch here on Saturday spoiling all the triple crown fun again this year!

2004 Belmont Replay

(Scenario #2) – We’ll call having a “Big Brown” Moment!

In 2008, Big Brown wheeled into the GI Belmont Stakes with massive Derby and Preakness wins under his belt and was the post time 1/4 favorite as 90,000 plus sweltered in the first of the summer heat that day to be on hand for his coronation.

Well, it didn’t turn out to be any such thing as Big Brown did make a good move on the far turn to vie but by the 1/4 pole of broken Triple Crown dreams Big Brown was out of gas and just cantered home to finish dead last! While a horse named Da Tara wired that field at 38/1 to one the quietest finishes to a Belmont Stakes ever. Only the sound of rattling hooves and the flutter of thousands of Big Brown tickets hitting the ground could be heard that day.

For those of you looking for another long shot winner here on Saturday this is your scenario as those of you who question California Chrome’s pedigree to go this 1 1/2 mile distance are dying to be proven right and just maybe your right!

(Scenario  #3) – We’ll call “The Secretariat Moment

In this 1973 Belmont reprise, California Chrome is indeed the very best 3yo in the land this year and goes on to win by open and an ever-widening lengths by the line as perhaps the California Chrome is at the head of the Class of 2014.

If this turns out to be the case, then get ready for a great rising and deafening noise to spread all over Belmont Park as California Chrome runs off and hides to a win that will shake the old gal right down to her foundations!
