It’s Preakness time once again this Saturday as this year’s edition offers “10” 3yo’s to do battle once around these hallowed thoroughbred racing grounds here at old hilltop.
Social Inclusion, at 5/1, by Pioneerof the Nile, 3rd in the GI Wood Memorial Stakes last out! Falter in the stretch of that race after leading the vanguard as this one will most assuredly be an early front-runner in this race!
Ride On Curlin, at 10/1, by Curlin, 7th in the GI Kentucky Derby last out. Got buried on the rail in the derby but was making up ground once outside of all that inside traffic. Gets a Joel Rasario ride this time and will need to be closer to the lead here to be effective!
Bayern, at 10/1, by Offlee Wild, was Dq’d down to 2nd after winning the GIII Derby Trial Stakes last out! Early Speed and Early Speed and did we mention he’s an early speed type. This boy loves to go fast and first from the gate but can he keep it up for a mile and 3/16’s here on Saturday!
Dynamic Impact, at 12/1, by Tiznow, winner of the GIII Illinois Derby last out nipping Midnight Hawk right at the line in that 1 1/8 mile tussle. Closer type here and just might find a home on the board with all the early speed here this Saturday!
General A Rod, at 15/1, by Roman Ruler, 11th in the GI Kentucky Derby last out and didn’t get the best possible trip that day. Tends to like it upfront early and his battles with Wildcat Red this past winter at G/P are the stuff of legend. A better horse then most suspect!
Kid Cruz, at 20/1, by Lemon Drop Kid, winner of the Tesio Stakes prep here last out and comes in off two straight stakes wins stalking or coming late in both. Definitely not an early speed type and be a nice super filler here!
Pablo Del Monte, at 20/1, by Giant’s Causeway, 3rd in the GI Toyota Bluegrass Stakes last out where he was the early pace only to falter to 3rd. This one’s got a real mixed bag of surface trips and early running styles so your guess is as good as anyone else’s how he’ll fare here on Saturday!
Ring Weekend, at 20/1, byTapit, 2nd in the Calder Derby last out, now gelded “ouch”, but went all the way on the front end in his GII Tampa Bay Derby win earlier this year. The PP’s say his is more of a stalker type however. If he can rate here and let the early speeds fall away in the stretch then he has got a shot at a board strike!
Ria Antonia, at 30/1, by Rockport Harbor, 2013 B/C Juvenile Fillies winner last fall but finished 6th in the GI Kentucky Oaks last out. We don’t see how the extra 16th helps her at all in here, especially off just 2 weeks rest! We believe her connections wanted her here as they think they have another famous 3yo filly with the initials R/A on their hands. They’ll know more about that at about 6:25 pm this coming Saturday.
So, the 2014 GI Preakness Stakes has a nicely sized betting field of ten to work with, lots of early speed to set a crisp pace and of course a GI Kentucky Derby winner, what more could you want for the 2nd Jewel of the Triple Crown Series this year!
