The $1,000,000, GI Santa Anita Derby goes off this Saturday at Santa Anita Park

California Chrome and Candy Boy, will lock horns for the first time ever and maybe settle the best of the west 3yo question in this Saturday’s $1,000,000, GI Santa Anita Derby, for 3yo, at 1 1/8 mile over the Santa Anita main track as another 100 derby points goes to this year’s winner.

Free Past Performances,

California Chrome, at 6/5, winner of the GII San Felipe Stakes here last out setting swift factions in a wire to wire score. Will probably go out early again this Saturday to set the pace and maybe try to run this field right off its feet early. He is already on his way to Louisville next month so a win here is not critical, just a solid performance!

Candy Boy, at 9/5, winner of the GII Robert B. Lewis Stakes here last out beating GIII Sunland Derby winner Chitu that day with a solid late run. If California Chrome, falters right after the 16th pole this one will be on him with a deep stretch drive. This one’s more of a closer type!

Hoppertunity, at 3/1, sticks close to home this time after winning the GII Rebel Stakes for the baffert barn last out at Oaklawn coming with a solid stretch run over a w/f Oaklawn main track for the 1/2 length win over a late surging Tapiture who had a troubled trip that day! Not an early speed type either but he’ll have to stay within range of California Chrome, early for that late run again and hope California Chrome, hasn’t run right off the screen by then!

Schoolofhardrocks, at 10/1, 4th in the GII San Felipe Stakes here last out where he went early with California Chrome, and just got plain worn out chasing him but holding on for the super spot. He has but 2 lifetime starts and probably needs seasoning or needs to grow up real fast here on Saturday and rate a bit more. Look for him to possibly chase again here on Saturday!

Rprettyboyfloyd, at 20/1, 3rd in the GII San Vicente Stakes 2 back then was nosed out by Big Tire, here last out in a $56k Msw at a mile. He goes into this GI race with not even a Mdn win to his credit. This one’s something of a closer type but will have to find several new levels in his game to be in the mix here!

Big Tireat 20/1, winner of that same $56k Msw last out, nosing out Rprettyboyfloyd, but has been slow to develop with just 1 win in 6 starts but is a son of Candy Ride! Stalker/pouncer type and might in fill a super for you at a good price!

Friendswith K Mill, at 20/1, 2nd to The Admiralin a March 16th, 1 1/16 mile Alw here last out by 1/2 length and did make up a few lengths in the stretch for that runner-up award! He does have some closing abilities but needs to find much more here on Saturday to even be competitive.

Dublin Up, at 30/1, 3rd in that same March 16th S/A $56k Msw last out but by just a neck, while surrender a deep stretch lead in the final jumps! Could go early here on Saturday, too!
