For those of you not familiar with Sunland Park or the GIII Sunland Derby here’s a brief history!
The GIII Sunland Derby and Sunland Park sprang into to prominence via 2 avenues. Firstly, some year’s back this track became what’s known in the industry today as a “Racino” as Sunland Park added a casino to its racing operations which generated lots of cash to start offering up huge stakes purses like this $800,000, GIII Sunland Derby.
Secondly, in 2009 this race drew in a horse named Mine That Bird who finished but a modest 4th here that year, but earned enough in graded earnings, at the time, to find a minimal berth into the 2009 GI Kentucky Derby where you already know the rest of this 50/1 fairytale story.
Top west coast trainer Bob Baffert, who has won this thing a time or 2 is bringing Midnight Hawk, at 5/2, (already in our 2014 Kentucky Derby Profile line up) and Chitu , at 4/1, 2nd to Candy Boy last out in the GII Bob Lewis Stakes is out this Sunday looking for those 50 derby points.
Todd Pletcher is also bringing a pair in Global Strike, at 8/1, is the winner of a 1 1/8 mile Mdn at G/P last out timed in 1:52 in a wire to wire score and the highly touted Commissioner, at 7/2 who looked so good winning a Jan 3rd G/P $75k Oc at 1 1/8 mile run in a sharp 1:50.3, looked lost in the GII Fountain Of Youth Stakes last out coming 6th back 10 lengths and was never near the lead ever in the tilt! He needs a strong come back and maybe the 1 1/8 mile will be more in his wheelhouse here on Sunday!
Tanzanite Cat , at 6/1, winner of the $150k Smarty Jones at Oaklawn earlier this season is back looking for a Derby #140 berth and needs points after a 5th finish in the GIII Southwest Stakes last out.
Bourbonize , at 6/1, was 6th last out in that same GIII Southwest Stakes and needs to improve here.
Garen , at 10/1 and a half brother to Invasor, is the winner of a S/A 47k Mdn last out going wire to wire at 1 1/16 mile in 1:43.2 back on Feb. 17th.
So, the great Southwest is where the top 3yo action will be this Sunday as Sunland Park closes out its leg of the 2014 Derby Trail season with its 3yo grand finale in the $800,000, GIII Sunland Derby!

*Note – last year this track was wired for early speed and thusly setting several main track records in the process! It could be that the Sunland Park grounds crew could have this track all wired up again for its big showcase day, so take note of the undercard races for early clues to how the track is playing!
