$350,000, GII Tampa Bay Derby, 3YO, at 1 1/16 mile, (dirt) ( Race #11, Post time 5:25 p.m. EST).
“10“, 3yo’s will go postward here at Tampa Bay Downs this Saturday as their wind-up to their leg of the 2014 Derby Trail season in this year’s edition of the $350,000, GII Tampa Bay Derby where 50 points and a sure fire Derby 140 gate awaits Saturday’s victor!
Vinceremos , at 4/1, by Pioneerof the Nile, was a last out winner, by a nose, over team mate Harpoon, both out of the Todd Pletcher barn, to hold on for the win in the GIII Sam F. Davis Stakes here back on Feb 1st. where he had to come again for the win. We loved his ability to re-rally last time out for the win and as the distance here on Saturday is the same he’ll have no problem being in the mix again. Mostly a stalker type, so no early front action here from this one!
Conquest Titan , at 7/2, by Birdstone, was back those 5 lengths to Cairo Prince in the GII Holy Bull Stakes over at G/P last out, but was closing from a way back in 11th on the backstetch that day! He was the early pace in the 2013 GI B/C Juvenile test before fading to a way off the board finish. A good finish here could set up this son of Birdstone for those longer distance Triple Crown starts either here in the U.S. or up on the Canadian Triple Crown trail later this summer! Needs to be closer to the early pace here on Saturday for a better run at the win.
Surfing U S A, at 3/1, by Roman Ruler, is the other Todd Pletcher entry for this race. He comes in off a fading 2nd to Top Billing in a Jan 25th 1X $75k Oc at 1 1/16 mile at G/P after surrendering an early lead to be back 2 3/4 lengths at the line. Something of a buzz horse in this race so watch for some wise guy money on this one here this Saturday. He is another possible early speed horse here!
Cousin Stephen , at 9/2, by Proud Citizen, faded to 3rd here last out in the GIII Sam Davis after being the early speed in that race. He did dig in gamely in the stretch run, but was trapped between the 1-2 finishers to be only 3/4 length back at the finish. Probable early speed here again on Saturday but at this same 1 1/16 mile distance so he could be a board threat once again!
Matador , at 8/1, by Malibu Moon, is the other Mark Casse trainee in here who was 4th in that same GIII Sam F. Davis Stakes but by just length last out. He also ran well up at Woodbine in his 2yo season with a stakes turf win there! Not generally an early speed horse, either!
East Hall , at 10/1, by Graeme Hall, came 4th last out in the GII Fountain of Youth Stakes at G/P just 2 weeks ago but was back more than 6 lengths that day! He also was 3rd in the Gulfstream Park Derby on Jan 1st and 3rd again in the OBS Championship Stakes at OTC 2 back, as well! Again, not a lot of early speed here either!
Hy Kodiak Warrior , at 10/1, by Kodiak Kowboy, was 3rd by 2 1/4 lengths to Commissioner and Top Billing in that G/P, Jan 3rd, 1 1/8 mile, $75k 1x, dust-up where he could make no real stretch gains! Closer type and is other name getting some buzz down here!
Coltimus Prime , at 15/1, by Milwaukee Brew, 2nd in the Display Stakes at Woodbine last out and Tuscan Getaway , at 20/1, by Stroll, who hasn’t run since an alw win at Woodbine are both trained by same trainer and both will bring early speed to this race!
So, “50” Derby Points go to the winner here on Saturday as Tampa Bay Downs will send its very best to Derby #140 on the first Saturday in May from the $350,000, GII Tampa Bay Derby!
