Mucho Macho Man , and Will Take Charge , will square off again over this same 1 1/4 mile Santa Anita main track where last fall they finished just a nose apart in the $5,000,000, GI Breeders’ Cup Classic in a stretch duel for the ages.
Mucho Macho Man , at 9/5, winner of that GI Breeders’ Cup Classic and then won the $400,000, Florida Sunshine Millions Classic Stakes last out by 14 unanswered lengths. He comes into this race off a 2 race, GI winning streak over this surface and might be in the best form of his career, right now. Stalks and closes and has plenty of size to win this 1 1/4 mile race! An exacta box must here!
Will Take Charge , at 2/1, closed out 2013 by beating Game On Dude , in the GI Clark at Churchill last fall with those now famous long withering late strides of his! In his return to racing this year, he just couldn’t run down the front running Lea in the GI Donn Hcp. last out! He is deserving of these 2/1 odds here but our only concern is has D. Wayne run him in one too many races in a row without some kind of real freshening pause? Otherwise, in a word “closer” here as those long late strides of his should bring him into the mix by the line and another must for our exacta box.
Game On Dude , at 5/2, is the returning champion for this GI title and is this race’s title holder for 2 of the past 3 seasons here at Santa Anita. To be honest, the “Dude” has been kind of flaky of late, as he ran super in the GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar, than had an awful looking 9th finish as the fav in last fall’s B/C Classic, then losing in a top effort to Will Take Charge , in the GI Clark by just a head, and then coming a weak looking 5th in the GII San Antonio Stakes here last out!
We do not know which Game On Dude will show up here on Saturday but these 5/2 odds look a bit gifty for this old GI warrior who might have lost a few steps now. The Dude’s gotta have the early lead to set his kind of pace here, otherwise he just doesn’t fare well when he can’t and a 2 race losing streak over one of his favorites surfaces is not a good sign, either. Sorry Dude, a super spot is the best we can do for you, right now!
Blingo , at 8/1, is an interest price here coming off that GII San Antonio Stakes win by 1/2 length in 1:47.4 for his first ever graded win and fighting with Imperative , all the way down the lane, too. He made a nice move on the far turn, to hang in for the win but it wasn’t an easy win for him. Stalker/Closer type when he wins but has yet to be consistant at the graded level! Good price here as a replacement for Game On Dude in your exacta box play, if you can feel it!
Imperative , at 12/1, tried to re-rally unsuccessfully in that same GII San Antonio Stakes last out but coming up that 1/2 length short. But before this GII placing, this one had been knocking around the alw level for a long time picking up minor awards at best. A one out fluke last time or has he finally found his graded stride? Another closer type here!
Rousing Sermon , also at 12/1, has been making a living at middle distances on the Alw and minor Stakes level since his more headier days as a 3yo Derby contender darling several years back now. A GI, at the classic 1 1/4 mile distance probably isn’t his thing but he could hang on for the last piece of the super here on Saturday!
American Blend , at 20/1, was 3rd in that same GII San Antonio Stakes last out finishing off that winner by 4 3/4 lengths. Another Oc or alw level type at the sprinting or middle distances who got just the right trip in the GII San Antonio Stakes last out! Like Imperative , has he found that missing graded stride at last or is he a one hit wonder, as well! Got 10 cents for a back end super filler?
Hear the Ghost , at 20/1, is just plain wrong, graded winners and graded placers should never be 20/1. Yes, yes we see the 3rd last out in a S/A Alw here last time and off that effort we wouldn’t be mixing him in with the favorites here either, but at 20/1 his is in our super at the back end, at the very least!
So, the 2013 B/C Classic rematch is on this Saturday here at Santa Anita Park in the $750,000, GI Big Cap as this race will be shown live over the NBC Sports Network, too for all you home viewers as this just might be one of the top handicap division races of the year!
