The GIII Gotham Stakes is the 3rd leg of this season’s Derby Trail races here at the Aqueduct this winter, but it’s the first of the Kentucky Derby Championship Series races awarding 50-20-10-5 derby points to the top 4 finishers.
11, 3yo’s will go to post here on Saturday that will include,
Samraat, at 5/2, by Noble Causeway, who is unbeaten in 4 lifetime starts including a last out win in the GIII Withers Stakes, at this same 1 1/16 mile here at Aqueduct run in 1:46.1 and beating Uncle Sigh, by just a length after the pair fought for the lead all the way around the Aqueduct inner track last time! Early speed here so we won’t be surprise to see him setting early pace, once again!
Uncle Sigh, at 3/1, by Indian Charlie, was back that length last out in the GIII Withers Stakes for 2nd, following that race’s long, pitched front running duel with Samraat,! Early speed here too in this rematch but he might have to inside advantage this time breaking from post #3!
Noble Cornerstone , at 5/2 and now paired with Samraat, also by Noble Causeway, but had no run in him, at all, last out in that same GIII Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs where he finished 7th, 12 lengths off that winner and was never a factor. 2 back however, he was a driving 2nd by just a neck in the $250k Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park just missing at the line. This one tends to get off slowly which may or may not be Ok in the face of a very likely front running early duel between the favorites. Maybe he can close for a piece if you think you can draw a line thru that Sam F Davis start!
Extrasexyhippzster , at 4/1, by Stroll, won the Don Rickles Stakes here 2 back at 6f, in 1:10.1 by 5 lengths. Most recently, he took his show on the road to Laurel picking up the win in the $100k Miracle Woods Stakes going a mile in a nice 1:36.3, winning by 3 3/4 lengths! Loves to sit off the early pace and that could be a good strategy here on Saturday!
In Trouble, at 5/1, by Tizwonderful, is a last out winner of the GII Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park last fall, going 6f’s in 1:09.3, beating the now retired Corfu by 2 1/4 lengths! He is a stalker/pouncer type but stretches to 2-turns for the very first time here!
Financial Mogul , at 10/1, by Street Boss, was 2nd in the GII Nashua Stakes, 4th in the GII Futurity Stakes and last out came 6th, back 8 lengths in the GII Holy Bull Stakes at G/P so he seems to be backing up form wise right now! More of a closer than anything else!
Harpoon , at 10/1, by Tapit, was a loser by just a nose most recently in the GIII Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs as he was closing hard on the winner after being 4w on the far turn. The 1:47.1 for that 1 1/16 mile course was not that impressive however but any improvement by him here on Saturday could make this first of 3 Todd Pletcher runners here very competitive! Closer type and could close for a board hit here on Saturday if Uncle Sigh, and Samraat, tie up for another front running battle then fade at the end!
Deceived, at 15/1, by Broken Vow, did finish 3rd, 2 back, in the $100k Damon Runyon Stakes but was 19 lengths off of Samraat, that day. He did win a 1 mile $75k 1x Oc here last out by 8 1/4 lengths in 1:39.2. He was just off the early pace in both of his lifetime wins but this is the big time here on Saturday, so he’ll have to step it up a couple of levels here this weekend!
Classic Giacnroll , at 20/1, by Giacomo, 2 back was 2nd by 2 lengths in the GII Jerome Stakes back in early January, but was a disappointing 4th, 14 lengths back in the GIII Withers Stakes last out as he sat mid-pack all the way round in that 2-turn dust-up with no response in the stretch that day! This one’s more of a closer type and is going to have to find more in the stretch here on Saturday to be part of this show or watch Derby 140 from the Aqueduct backside!
Master Lightning , at 20/1, by Pulpit, offers graded experience with the mandatory Mdn and Alw wins too but falters at the stakes and G/S levels! This one is inconsistent breaking from the gate, as well but is the 2nd Todd Pletcher entry in here.
Monopolize , at 30/1, by Bernardini, the 3rd Todd Pletcher entry in here and is but a mdn winner thus far but was a distant 6th behind Top Billing last out in a G/P $75k 1x Oc 1 1/16 mile dust-up! We would not expect this one to be in the early vanguard either here on Saturday!
So, the 2014 Derby Trail rolls thru the Big Apple once again this weekend in the $500k, GIII Gotham Stakes where 50 Derby Points and probably a sure-fire derby gate will go to Saturday’s big winner!
