Well, race fans, it’s northern California’s turn to offer up its best hopefuls for the 2014 derby trail, as Golden Gate Fields offers “8” starters for Saturday’s, $200,000, GIII El Camino Real Derby, for 3yo’s, going 1 1/8 mile over the GG poly track!

This is the next to last 10-4-2-1 Derby Points race on the Churchill schedule for 2014, as monday’s GIII Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park will finish up the early Derby Prep season before we move on to the Championship series starting the weekend Feb 22nd.
Tamarando , at 3/1, by Bertando, won the $100k Real Quiet Stakes 3 back, then finished a distant 3rd in the GI CashCall Futurity last Dec. Last out he finished 2nd back 5 lengths to California Chrome in the $250k Calif Cup Derby at S/A. He does have a lot of poly experience as shown by winning the GI Del Mar Futurity last summer. He is Jerry Hollendorfer trained and gets a Mr. Golden Gate ride from Russell Baze! He seems to go wide a lot, so maybe a more inside run from the #4 post will help him save some energy for a big finish this time!
Enterprising, at 5/2, by Elusive Quality out of an A.P. Indy mare, Infosec , at 10/1, by Heatseeker, and Puppy Manners , at 8/1, by Kitten’s Joy are the 2-3-4 finishes in California Derby here (the local prep for this graded event) last out as all finished well but not enough for the win!
Dance With Fate , at 7/2, by Two Step Salsa, finished 2nd in the GI Del Mar Futurity and again in the GI Front Runner Stakes last season, then 8th in the GI B/C Juvenile Stakes and well out of it, too. Last out he won an $80k 1x Oc turf mile tilt at S/A with a nice solid finish, clicking off a 1:34.4 in that 1 3/4 length win. He does well over turf and poly surfaces and can come from behind or win on the lead. Quite use able here!
Craftsman , at 8/1, by Mastercraftman, has a turfers blood and does offer an Irish Grp 3 win on his resume. He did come 5th last out in the $75k Eddie Logan Stakes at S/A, 4 lengths behind Enterprising, in his first U.S. outing! We’re not sure about using this one here on Saturday but if you’ve got the “long shot inch”, scratch here, as you’ll probably get a very good price!
I’ll Wrap It Up, at 10/1, by Tapit, is a Doug O’Neill 3yo, who came 4th, 2 back in the GIII Sham Stakes, then was 4th again in that same $80k Oc losing to Dance With Fate, by 4 lengths. Some poly experience here and does seems to find a home in some kind of money position in all his starts. Might be a good super filler, especially at a big price!
Icy Ride , at 10/1, by Candy Ride again, is Bob Baffert trained but has no wins or board hits either in 4 tries. He might have golden connections but starts mid-pack, sits mid-pack and finishes mid-pack.Perhaps he wakes up on Saturday to a 3yo moment, but your guess is as good as Big Bob’s here!
So, 8 will go to the gates in Golden Gate Fields 2014 contribution to this year’s Derby Trail in the $200,000, GIII El Camino Real Derby, as the Bay Area plays host to the only Saturday derby trail contest this weekend!
