The $300,000, GI Las Virgenes Stakes, for 3yo Fillies, at just a mile, over the Santa Anita main track fires up the GI 3yo fillies season here on Saturday and does offer up 10 points towards a GI Kentucky Oaks gate, as well!
Streaming , at 2/1, by Smart Strike, won the GI Hollywood Starlet Stakes last out over at BHP as she hovered just off Taste Like Candy , early then shook loose for the 1 1/2 length win running the 1 1/16 mile course in 1:44.4. This one is Bob Baffert trained and will probably be your post time fav!
Taste Like Candy , at 5 /2, by you guess it Candy Ride, was the early leader in that same GI Hollywood Starlet Stakes 2 back before surrendering the lead in the stretch. She was 2nd again last out here in the GII Santa Ynez Stakes but was 2nd all the way around in that shootout! She’s a Jerry Hollendorfer trainee who love it up front early!
Arethusa , at 8/1, by A.P. Indy, won the Sharp Cat Stakes 2 back by 8 1/4 lengths going that 1 1/16 BHP poly course distance in 1:45.2, but last out had early troubles in the GI Hollywood Starlet Stakes before steadying to finish 5th, 4 1/2 back! A definite closer here so we wouldn’t look for her to be in the early vanguard here on Saturday.
Sushi Empire , at 8/1, by Empire Maker, won the $75k Blue Norther Stakes here last out going a mile over the Santa Anita turf in a very nice 1:36.1 time, in a good stalking and pouncing win! No dirt experience here, but a daughter of Empire Maker should be able to managed the surface switch and will probably stalk the early pace here!
Fashion Plate , at 4/1, by Old Fashioned, won a 6f $56k Mdn here last out clocking a swift 1:09.1 to breeze to a big 6 1/4 length win and all the way on the front end, too! She’d seem to be a natural early speed here on Saturday!
Artemis , at 4/1, also by Empire Maker, broke her maiden here last out in a $56k Mdn outing at a mile run in 1:37 flat collaring the leader by the 2nd call and then never looking back for the 1 length win! She’s Jerry Hollendorfer trained and gets a HOF Mike Smith ride so look for her to be somewhere in the early mix here on Saturday!
Saintly Joan, at 15/1,by Northern Afleet, did run in both the Blue Norther Stakes and the Sharp Cat Stakes but was well off the winners in both! She does have her maiden win over this same strip 3 back so the Santa Anita dirt is no stranger to her! This one’s been over all the surfaces and distances too as her handlers seem to be searching the right set up for her and it never hurts to have a GI try on your resume either for big races down the line!
Earthflight , at Scr’d, by Medicean, is a british import, won 3 of 4 modest stakes races at Wolverhampton as a 2yo last year, winning a 1 3/16 mile poly stakes tussle there last out! Switching continents and surfaces might be asking a bit much for this newly minted 3yo filly but like Saintly Joan above, having a GI on your resume can’t hurt and there’s always some kind of a check to pick up here!
