Tampa Bay Downs – rolls out 2014 edition of the GIII Sam F. Davis Stakes this Saturday

The $250,000, GIII  Sam F. Davis Stakes, for 3yo’s, at 1 1/16 mile, over the Tampa Bay Downs main track drew a full field of 8, 3yo Kentucky Derby prospects as there are no Derby Points involved in this leg of the 2014 Tampa Bay Downs Derby Trail chase!

We’ll start our race preview with the pair from the Todd Pletcher barn,

Harpoon, at 4/1, by Tapit, who broke his maiden over at Gulfstream last out after grabbing the lead by the 2nd call then slowly drew off to a 5 1/4 length victory covering the mile in 1:37 flat. He’s been a post time favorite in his last 3 races, once ahead of Cairo Prince 3 back but did burned your money twice. He caught the right field last time for the win and isn’t a bad exotics thought in this group!

Vinceremos , at 6/1, by Pioneer Of the Nile, is also a last out $47k, Mdn winner at a mile at Gulfstream clocking a slower 1:39 plus time holding on for the win by a “head”! His blood lines are solid and perhaps the extra distance here might bring out his inherited genes for a good showing here! He is also x-entered in the GII Hutcheson Stakes over at Gulfstream this Saturday, as well!

Cousin Stephen , at 3/1, by Proud Citizen, has had a pair of recent outs here at the 1 1/8 mile distance breaking his maiden 2 back at that distance in 1:52 but came 5th but only 2 1/2 lengths back last out in that same Gulfstream Oc on Jan 3rd where the highly touted Commissioner won that 1 1/8 mile tussle in 1:50.3! This one could be sneaky good in here and any good price on him would bring him into our super thinking, at the very least!

Noble Cornerstone , at 7/2, by Noble Causeway, just missed last out in the Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park where he came up a neck short at the line after closing sharply in the stretch, otherwise he’d be 2 for 2 lifetime! Perhaps, the extra distance will help him get his nose in front this time!

Asserting Bear , at 9/2, by Bear’s Kid, made all kinds of noise up at Woodbine as a 2yo last season winning the $250,000 Coronation Futurity Stakes there 2 back going 1 1/8 mile in a nice 1:50.4, driving to a 1 length win. He didn’t fare as well last out in the $125k Kingarvie Stakes where he surrendered a stretch lead to come 2nd by just 3/4’s of a length! He seems to like that Woodbine poly so the switch to first time dirt here is a question mark!

Matador , at 6/1, by Malibu Moon, is another Great White North entry here as 2 back he won the Cup and Saucer  Stakes out on the Woodbine turf then finished 6th well back in that same Coronation Futurity Stakes last out! Something of a long layoff here and switch to dirt too could be a problem for him here!

School On a Hill , at 12/1, by Student Council, had way off the board finishes in the GII Summer Stakes at Woodbine and the GIII Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland last season then has run twice at the alw with a 3rd and 4th finish. Comes late whenever he does come and always a bit short, too! But still his blood lines say there’s something here so he got to make a good showing here to be considered any kind of a derby contender!

Imaginethatmom , at 15/1, by Imperialism, brings stakes and graded experience to this 2-turn tussle finishing 5th in the GIII Dania Beach Stakes here last out and 2 back was 4th in the Pulpit Stakes here at Gulfstream as he made only modest headway in the stretch of both races but never a real threat!
