Heir Kitty goes for 2nd straight graded win in GII Santa Monica Stakes – Post Positions, Picks, M/L Odds, Free Past Performances

Heir Kitty - winning today's GI La Brea Stakes here on Santa Anita Park's opening day of the winter meeting
Heir Kitty – winning the GI La Brea Stakes here on opening day of the Santa Anita Park’s winter meeting last month

The $200,000, GII Santa Monica Stakes, for 4yo and up F/M sprinters, at 7f’s, over the Santa Anita main track is the lone graded race on the Santa Anita Saturday card as Heir Kitty , last month’s GI La Brea Stakes winner leads a group of “7” fast ladies forward to the gates for this 7f’ ladies shootout!

Free Past Performances,

Heir Kitty , won last month’s GI La Brea Stakes by 1 1/4 length over front-runner Sweet Lu Lu clicking off a good 1:21.2 with a nice 3w stretch run for the win. Up until a few races ago she had been knocking around west coast mid-distance stakes and graded stakes affairs with only modest successes. But 2 back she seemed to find her sprinters legs closing well enough for an Alw sprint win over at BHP that vaulted her to that surprising 13/1 win in the GI La Brea Stakes last out. We like to see that closing speed just one more time before climbing onto her bandwagon but we’d still use her in our exotics thinking!

Teddy’s Promise , has many a graded win out here on the left coast including this GII sprint tilt here last year winning it by 3 lengths. This one’s always a top west coast ladies sprinter at the stakes and graded stakes level and her last out was a win in the Playa Del Rey Stakes over at BHP on Dec. 15th going all the way on the lead to a 1 1/4 length win going 6f’s in 1:09.3. She just about a must use in here and anything at 3/1 or better on her would make her a solid exotics choice for us!

Winding Way, whose been a poly and turf sprinting specialist for most of her career was 6th last out coming down the hill here in the GII Monrovia Stakes, where she faded in the lane after vying early. She is a graded winner and with a number of graded placings as 3 back she was 2nd in the GIII Sen.Ken Maddy Stakes here on Breeders’ Cup opening day.

She tends to want to go out early but doesn’t always have the stuff for a consistent finish, so look for her to be the early vanguard here!

Iotapa, was 2nd to Beholder here last spring in the GI S/A Oaks, then went on the win the Railbird Stakes next at BHP last spring, then finished a good 2nd again in the GII Hollywood Oaks, and then closed out her 2013 campaign early with a 3rd in the GII San Clemente Hcp out on the Del Mar turf behind Wishing Gate and Unusual Way. A long layoff here for this one so rust might a problem here but otherwise she fits right into our exotics thinking with her resume!

Scherzinger , trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and Socialbug , trained by Bob Baffert are the 1-2 finishers in a recent S/A $62.5k 2x alw sprint where they were just 1/2 length apart at the line, covering 6f’s in a quick 1:08.3, where Socialbug , surrendered a front-running deep stretch lead! Look for Socialbug to be an early leader while you can look for Scherzinger , to come on late trying to pick up a piece at the end! Both of them could be trouble in here if they can stretch the extra 1/8!

Lexington Pearl , relocates from South Florida here on Saturday as she was a good 2nd in the Golden Slippers Stakes at GP last out. She’s done her best running however down in the South Florida alw ranks at GP and Calder over a modest career. She seems a bit out of place in here so maybe she is a long shot, back-end, cheap super play here, if the price is right!
