The $200,000, GII San Pasqual Stakes for 4yo’s and up, at 1 1/16 mile out on the Santa Anita main this Saturday drew a field of “7” top So/Cal handicap division runners with some old friends included from the 2013 GIII Native Diver Stakes in the 1,3,4 finishers!
Blueskiesnrainbows , at 2/1, is the winner of that same GIII Native Diver Stakes by just a 1/2 length covered that 1 1/8 mile BHP cushioned course in a reasonable enough 1:50 dead flat going wire to wire all the way on the front end. He did finish 2nd in last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Marathon 2 back where he didn’t strike for the early lead as is his m/o. Look for him to probably once again drag this group around by the nose from gate to wire here on Saturday as the shorter 1 1/16 mile here will only play into his front running strength!
Rousing Sermon , at 5/2, was 3rd by just a length in that same GIII Native Diver last out, but was 3rd at the start, 3rd at the 1st and 2nd calls, 3rd on the far turn and 3rd at the top of the stretch and you get the picture, he was going nowhere in that race but 3rd.
Drill , at 6/1, was once an early Derby prospect, found a home in west coast sprinting circles picking up minor awards in some of the top graded sprint action out here on the “left coast”! His handlers tried him at 2-turns once again in that same GIII Native Diver only to come up again with a minor award with a 4th finish 2 3/4 lengths back! He did move from 6th to 4th last time out but we still think he is still better suited for 7f’s!
Blingo , at 7/2, won the $100k ImABanker Stakes at Belmont Park way back on Oct 14th last year in a snappy 1:41.2 for 1 1/16 mile course, but is mostly known for his work out here on the So/Cal circuit. He won the $75k La Puente Stakes here in 2012 so he has Santa Anita experience! He has missed some time due to injuries over the recent past and this would be a 3rd start off that most recent long layoff! Tends to win when he closes well but that’s not always easy over this oval!
Spud Spivens , at 12/1, was something of an early 2012 buzz horse until injury sidelined him after a distant 4th in the 2012 GI Hollywood Gold Cup, until now. Long layoff, with only alw wins and with only minor placings at times at the stakes and graded stakes level! Good to see the Spudster is back, but not in here, but then again why not if he’s ready!
Majestic City , at 5/1, once a top west coast 2yo with derby prospects faded into sprinting out here collecting minor placings in the stakes and graded stakes that helps pay his freight. He won the $70k Big Bear Stakes here at a mile in a nice 1:35.1 time 2 back and last out finished 2nd in the GIII Berkley Hcp up at Golden Gate but was back 6 lengths over that poly surface! We like him in a super play here on Saturday but only on the backend of it!
Majestic Harbor , at 6/1, is a midwest, middle-distance runner by trade with a handful of Alw victories and offers some midwest stakes and grade stakes experiences over those mid-country venues. We don’t see how he fits in here but if you’re looking to fill out a cheap super play with a long shot pony this one might be your guy!
