Yes, race fans it is 3yo time again out at Santa Anita Park this weekend as the 2014 edition of the $100,000, GIII Sham Stakes, for 2014 derby trail 3yos, goes just a mile out on the Santa Anita main this Saturday!
Free Past Performances, ←Brisnet
“6”, 3yo’s will go to the post for this next Southern California Derby Trail test on the Road to Louisville this May 3rd as this race will offer 10 points towards a 2014 GI Kentucky Derby gate to the winner in this 10-4-2-1 Derby points GIII tussle!
Life Is a Joy , at 12/1, by Gobalize, was an OK 2nd in the $200k King Glorious Stakes back 6 1/4 lengths over at BHP last out where he did get up late for the 2nd spot! This one has got a fairly long resume for a newly-minted 3yo with obligatory Mdn, Alw and minor stakes wins under his belt already. Has been making steady improvement over his past 3 starts and does offer mile experience too!
Ontology , at 8/1, by Tapit, is a 2013 GI Front Runner Stakes and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf veteran but was way out of the money in both. He was 4th in the GIII Generous Stakes 2 back then finally breaking his maiden here in a Santa Anita maiden turfer at a mile last out run in a nice 1:35.2, winning by 2 1/4 lengths. Lots of graded and distance experience here and probably deserves a home in your exotics thinking!
The last 4 entries here are all Mdn winners only, of which Kristo , at 2/1, by Distorted Humor, deserves a first look, winning a Oct 30th mdn tussle here at 1 1/16 mile over this Santa Anita main in a nice 1:43.1, winning by 6 1/2 lengths in a wire to wire performance. He could be an early speed here!
I’ll Wrap It Up , at 8/1, also by Tapit, is a O’Neill/Reddam 3yo coming off a BHP, 1 1/16 mile Mdn win by 3 3/4 lengths but in a dull 1:45 flat. Still he has made steady progress in his 5 lifetime starts and may stalk the early pace here!
Top Fortitude ,at 2/1, by Top Hit, has but a lone Mdn win over at BHP last out, covering 6 1/2 f’s in a nice 1:16.1 over the cushion track. He came 3w off the far turn to run up to that 2 3/4 lengths win!
Midnight Hawk , at 8/5, by, you guess it, Midnite Lute, is a Bob Baffert trainee to boot. Won his only out, at 7 1/2 f’s in a Mdn over the BHP cushion track in 1:29 flat, in a going away 6 3/4 lengths win, where he re-rallied by the stretch to run off to that ever widening victory! Midnite Lute/Bob Baffert with a Mike Smith ride here with an impressive looking first out win. Sounds like a lot of local money might show up here to see if this horse “can do”!
So, the Road to Louisville runs thru Santa Anita this weekend in the GIII Sham Stakes as someone in here will take that next step forward towards Churchill Downs on May 3rd and claims those waiting 10 points towards a 2014 Derby berth!
