The 2014 edition of the $200,000, GII Fort Lauderdale Stakes, for 4yo and up turfers, goes at 1 1/16 mile out on the Gulfstream turf course and is the big Saturday turf featured race at Gulfstream Park!
“8” top handicap division turfers plus 2 MTO entries will go postward in this important mid-distance, GII, classic turf test of the 2014 Gulfstream winter meet!
Summer Front , at 5/2, gets our first look with very tight 2nd in the GII Citation Hcp at BHP last out were a head bob was the only difference! He is 15-7-2-3 lifetime with 3 GIII titles over the sod so he should be in your exotic thinking here on Saturday! He also gets a ride from the very hot “Jersey” Joe Bravo too here on Saturday!
Nikki’s Sandcastle , at 8/1, winner of the GII Fayette Stakes at Keeneland last fall runs his first race since here on Saturday. This ones had an up and down turf career of late as he does seem to have trouble beyond the 1 1/16 mile distance. So 1 1/16 mile would seem to be in this ones wheelhouse and as he is coming off a bit of a freshen-up, a GII win and generally does his best running in South Florida turfers he is one you can wash around in your exotics pallet! Oh and when he does close well, he wins!
Slumber , at 8/1, who got the turfing world’s attention with 2 solid alw wins up at Saratoga this past summer but found quickly he wasn’t quite ready for American GI company with a pair of off the board finishes in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes and then the GI Pattison Canadian International up at Woodbine last out! Perhaps the cut back to 1 1/16 mile here might be helpful to his cause this Saturday.
Howe Great, at 5/1, is from the same great turfing generation as Summer Front, but seems to been the bridesmaid horse lately with 4 board hits in his last 5 graded tries. Last out was 7th in the GIII Red Smith at Aqueduct where he struggle with that 1 3/8 mile distance there. He should be better at this shorter distance here and does own a GIII win over this surface already! Seems to us, he might be in that front-running vanguard here on Saturday too!
Hierro , at 6/1, is a middle distance dirt runner who has been trying the turf in his past 2 outs, both 3x alw tussles winning a mile turfer here last out in 1:36. 3 in a nice 3w stalking trip winning by 2 lengths. He’s never gone this far before over either turf or dirt but he does offer graded experience. Get a good price on him before bringing him into your exotics thinking!
Tetradrachm , at a very gifty 3/1, has had 3 reasonably good trips in his last 3 graded outings with a 2nd, 3rd and a 4th but his lifetime wins have all come down at the Alw level. This one will be price dependent for us but would certainly be worth the dime to add him to the back-end of a 10 cent super play!
Mucho Mas Macho , at 12/1, is the defending champ in here on Saturday but has done no better than 3rd in any of his last 5 outings! “Horse for the course perhaps” – not so say the pp’s, so Super him only and only if you must!
Utley , at 10/1, whose graced many a turf alw or stakes field around the country in his career makes a graded start here on Saturday. He has only alw wins on his resume but did come a picking up the pieces 3rd last out here in the El Prado Stakes over a yielding turf that day! He’ll need to find a similar pace collapse and yielding surface here on Saturday to even get near a money position here on Saturday!
Csaba and Suns Out Guns Out , are MTO’s here and should the heavens open up here on Saturday that sends this race over to the main, use them both in exotics thinking in any rainy day action here in south florida!
