This Saturday’s card at Gulfstream Park offers up 2 GIII tussles that begins with the $100,000, GIII Old Hats Stakes, for 3yo fillies, at 6f’s over the Gulfstream main!
6 swift ladies will go to the post here in this 2014 edition, all with a hopeful eye toward a possible start at Churchill Downs on that first friday in May in the GI Kentucky Oaks.
Sweet Whiskey , at 2/1 on the m/l, is a Todd Pletcher trained 3yo filly sired by a name you might remember as a recent but ill-faded derby want-to-be in Old Fashioned. This one has 3 lifetime starts with a mdn win and last out with a good 2nd in the GII Matron Stakes at Belmont wayback in Sept. In 3 starts, she has finished in some kind of a money finish and her best efforts seem to come from early leads. Sounds like a solid candidate for this usual speed favoring Gulfstream main!
Zensational Bunny , at 3/1, is a Bob Baffert breed, pupil of Mark Casse by the fleet-footed Zensational. She owns 2 wins over the Woodbine poly surface in just 2 lifetime starts. This one is a sure-fire early front-runner here on Saturday as both her victories were wire to wire scores. So look for her on the early lead here this Saturday!
Milam , at 4/1, by Street Sense, owns a Mdn and Aoc win on her resume and was 4th in the GII Pocahontus Stakes at Churchill last fall! This one does her best running at the sprinting distances however and can win from on or off the early pace, too. A solid exotics pick here.
Co Cola , at 4/1, as well, is another Todd Pletcher trainee, by Candy Ride as old Todd might be looking at an exacta score here. She was 2nd by 3/4’s in the $100,000 Smart Halo Stakes at Laurel last out and does have a Mdn win to her name as well! Two starts can’t tell the tale about this daughter of Candy Ride yet but she got top connections and good speed both early and late. We’d prefer a better price here but she is quite exotics worthy is this shootout!
Aurelia’s Belle , at 6/1, by Lemon Drop Kid, has but a single Keeneland poly track Mdn to her very thin resume. She did close nicey for the “head” win over that Keeneland main where it’s usually hard to get by the stretch leader.
Side Street , at 8/1, is another daughter of Street Sense in this GIII, 6f shootout. She has the obligatory Mdn win already and was a good 1 length 2nd in a Calder 5 1/2 f, $50k Stakes run last out where she was gaining slowly on the winner at the end of that race. At 10/1 or better at post time, she would certainly be worth a dime in the back-end of a 10 cent super play as 6f’s does seem to be her limit, so far!
