Tampa Bay Downs – rolls out 2014 edition of the Pasco Stakes this Saturday

For all our friends on Florida’s golden west coast, the 2014, 3yo season gets underway at Tampa Bay Downs this Saturday as they’ll offer up the $100,000, Pasco Stakes for 3yo’s going 7f’s, over the Tampa Bay main!

Free Past Performances,

Although there are no Derby Points up for grabs here, 8, 3yos will test themselves here on Saturday as Tampa Bay Downs leg of the 2014 Derby Trail starts with this modest 7f test.  The top finishers here could ultimately find a berth later on in the season in the GII Tampa Bay Derby on March 8th this year where 2014 Derby Points will be available!

Cool Cowboy at  5/2, son of the speedy Kodiak Kowboy, won the $100k Inaugural Stakes here on Dec 7th at 6f’s, winning by 3 1/2 going away lengths in an easy 1:11 flat winning time. Don’t fooled by the 1:11 flat here this one cranked out a 1:08.3 2 back at Hawthorne in that 6f win. So this boy has got game and as the pp’s show tends to run up front early too!

Giancarlo , at 3/1, by Tapit, won a $29k Mdn last out at Calder at 6’f’s that he covered in 1:10.4 winning by 6 1/2 lengths, but remember Calder isn’t the speediest surface on the planet. This one too, likes it up front, either hot on the early pace or leading.

Mighty Brown , at 4/1, son of Big Brown, has 8 career starts on his resume running 2nd in the Jean La Fitte Stakes and then 6th in the GIII Delta Downs Jackpot both at Delta Downs where he was 2nd in the stretch before plunging to that off the board finish. Trained by Tim Ice (of Summer Bird fame) this one finally broke his maiden here last out in a Tampa Bay mdn tussle at 6f’s in a nice winning time of 1:10.1. Perhaps the Iceman has found the right career path (sprinting) for this 3yo son of our old buddy Big Brown!

Harry’s Holiday , at 5/1, out of Harlan’s Holiday and is a Mike Maker pupil who is 3-2-1-0 in his short career all at 6 or 6 1/2 f’s too. He won a $50k alw sprint at Gulfstream last out covering those 6 1/2 f’s in a solid enough 1:17 and chg winning by 2 3/4 lengths at the line. He seems to be something of an early stalker and is never to far from the early lead in his 3 starts!  Good connections and a good, never off the board early career form thus far so toss this one into your exotics thinking too!

Three Quarter Roy , at 6/1, by Concerto, won a 6f Gulfstream mdn race last out in a nice 1:10.4 sloppy track winning time by 6 lengths! Look to us like he found that early sloppy pace to his liking hanging tough on the early frame that drawing off for the going away win as his previous 2 starts were pretty much stagnate efforts! We’d be careful here with this one in here unless it’s a rainy day at Tampa Bay Downs this Saturday. Super him only and only at a much better price!

Early Entry, also at 6/1, by Keyed Entry, was 2nd in that same $100k Inaugural Stakes here on Dec 7th last out where he was slowly closing from the 5th spot early on and 2 back was a $29k Calder mdn winner. First or second in his last 3 starts and seems to be moving in the right direction anyway. He does have an iffy early race profile as it looks like the connections haven’t found the right early pace spot for him yet! It may not make that much of a difference here at Tampa Bay Downs as this surface, like Calder, does always favor early speed horses.
