If you can find some time between the hectic last-minute holiday shopping experience or those obligatory visits to the odds relative or two this Sunday, there is the $100k Harlan’s Holiday Stakes, for the older boys, at 1 1/16 mile over the Gulfstream Park dirt oval to ponder on!
The Harlan’s Holiday Stakes is one of those Gulfstream prep races for next month’s GI Donn Hcp, if you can believe it already.
Bourbon Courage , at 4/1, along with Neck ‘n Neck , at 3/1 and probably the lone Kitten’s Joy offspring who’s made a successful graded career on the dirt for himself in Csaba at 5/2 are the leading troika for this 2-turn title!
Csaba , edged away late to take the GIII Fred Hooper over at Calder last out and comes in here on a 2 race winning streak here in south florida. Ran a 1:52 and chg 1 1/8 mile last out but the 111 beyer seems a bit generous to us. Still being the slight favorite does seem to make some sense!
Neck ‘n Neck , is the winner of the GIII Matt Wynn, GII Indiana Derby and the GIII Ack Ack at Churchill all in 2012, but has just a single out this in the Michael G. Schaefer Memorial Stakes at Indiana Downs back in Oct where he finish 3rd back just length over a sloppy surface. If he is back to his 2012 form he’ll be a big factor late here on Sunday!
Bourbon Courage , who run a good 2nd to Graydar here in the GI Donn Hcp here last winter, then a solid 3rd again to Graydar in the GII New Orleans Hcp. He tbl in the GII Alysheba at Churchill this past spring coming 4th by 9 but was placed 3rd after an inquiry. Finished 4th in the GI Clark last month up at Churchill where he got up late to fill out the super! 4/1 sounds about right to us but 9/2 or even 5/1 would be better for him in here!
River Seven , at 5/1, beat a tiring Frac Daddy last out in the GIII Commonwealth Hcp at Churchill in only his 2nd lifetime try on dirt as this one’s a Woodbine poly or turf regular for most of his career. This 3yo son of Johannesburg does tend to stalk and then will pounce as he did competed in all 3 Canadian triple crown races this year!
Sr. Quisqueyano , at 6/1, is coming of a distant finish in that same GIII Fred Hooper over at Calder last out. His PP’s however show he does much better at 1 1/16 mile down here at the stakes level as he looks to be the early speed! Could hold on for a piece if the pace is hot enough and the pace is almost always is hot at Gulfstream!
Reveron , at 8/1, and gets a Joel Rosario ride here on Sunday. He was a top 2012 south florida derby trail prospect that year but after a good 2nd in the GI Florida Derby last year was sidelined was injury and didn’t return to racing again until an off 6th finish in a Gulfstream alw test at 6f’s last out. Yes, he is more of a 2-turn runner but he faded badly in his 6f return to racing so the 8/1 is more of a local gift to us than anything else!
Purple Egg , at 10/1, was a hot derby prospect last winter before pulling up halfway into his GII Tampa Bay Derby run earlier this year. He has had 3 races since, winning the $100k Barbaro Stakes at Del Park last out by more than 6 lengths! This son of Lionheart does have the goods to be a good middle distance runner but has to face some good quality in this 2-turn stakes here on Sunday. A board hit here would vindicate his pedigree and set him up for a good 2014. Super this one at any double digits to 1 odds!
Joshua’s Comprise , at 20/1, is a south florida favorite son who’s only win this year was a $25k alw this summer. Runs in a lot of South Florida races like this one but almost never find a home on the board in ay of them. Looking for a longshot to fill out a super with well here’s 10 cents worth for you to try!
So, Deck the Halls this weekend everyone, but if action is what you seek on Sunday well dial-up race #9 at Gulfstream on Sunday and watch’em go in the $100k Harlan’s Holiday Stakes on the road to next month’s GI Donn Hcp!
